Movie Review #4: Underdogs (2013)

Underdogs is a 2013 Sports film about a former college offensive coordinator who was signed to coach small town football team. Dysfunctional players and with no support from locals, will they succeed?

Most sports, Football in particular is a very physically tough sports: The grinding, the pushing, the yelling, the pummeling and so on and so forth ...

Movies about sports on the other hands offers a different side, well most of the time. Sure there is the usual stuff you see in most movie plot, that is because in part to build up that one big moment you see in the end: the climatic scene, the drama, the one that define a person or team failure or success, the one moment that even makes a hard hearted man cry (See Rudy)

Underdog unfortunately is not one of them. Lets start with the main character Vince DeAntonio played by D.B. Sweeney. D.B. is a good actor, I've seen Cutting Edge in my pre teen years and I used to think it was the most romantic film ever. In here however he seems bored and uninterested throughout the movie while the rest of the cast just played their part with minimal effort. I tried my best to stay the entire movie but even find myself disappointed when it ended.

Sports movies are made to create an impact, In my view however, Underdogs fails to deliver any of that.

Movie Review #3: Son of Batman

"Don’t look so stunned Father, I thought you’d be taller"

Alright, here is another review of a movie that I just watch last night.

With plans to dominate the entire world, the dangerous Ra’s al Ghul and his daughter Talia oversees an army of assassin training in a hidden location somewhere. However, it was deterred after a hostile takeover from a group within the league. Threaten by the emerging power, Talia and her young son Damian flees to Gotham city and seeks the protection of Batman who happens to be the boy’s father.

With his son now under his wings, he must teach the boy that killing is not the only way to fight crime. Only time will tell if he will succeed … or not!

I haven’t read the comic but from what I found out, there were tons of changes made when this was developed to film. Putting whatever disappointment those comic faithful have aside. I think this adaptation deserve to be, if not one of the best but great ones out there. Besides the good quality animation, the storyline is pretty much engaging in a sense that you get to see the other side of Batman and the other characters in a very cynical way. Not reading the comics has its benefit , since you will see some unexpected twist that will make you stay all the way to the end.

The only drawback to this film is that young children might find it difficult to watch due to its violence and a throw of  sexual suggestiosn at times but the I believe this is how every animated Batman movie should look like: Darker

And Son of Batman is just the right fit.

After Holiday Makeover at Work

2014 Holidays are over, so that means our Exhibit crew at California Academy of Sciences gets busy this morning deinstalling displays all over our building. The guys have torn down Snowman inside the Piazza and pretty soon the other will follow.

The Penguins exhibits is also close and it will be for a while. A couple of baby penguins were born not so long ago and they will be joining this family when it reopens. The reindeer though are still in the outside garden, unfortunately this will also be their last day here and they will be moved back to their owner by tomorrow.

Overall it should be a slow pace day at work.
How was your Monday morning?

Movie Review #2: I Love You Phillip Morris (2009)

"How do I know you're not bullshitting me again? "
"You don't ..."

It's time to do another short review of the movie I watch last night.

How Far would you go to save the love of your life? This is the theme of the film starring Jim Carrey as the charismatic small town police officer turned prisoner Steven Jay Russell.

After realizing he had a potential to be a con man, he work himself up the ladder only to find himself in big trouble and at the same time finding ways to reunite with his lover Jim (Ewan McGregor) whom he fall in love while in prison.

Judging by his performance Jim definitely delivers some of the familiar tactics I've seen in his other previous film such as The Mask, and Liar Liar. However, what differentiate his character compared to his other movies is that he hits it on the mark with this one, I could never say I have had enough! .
Its a bold and rather bit daring romance comedy . There are some bits and piece of creativity here in a way to let you stay in your seats. In the end though, despite of all this, the plot is not truly unique.

Satisfied nonetheless.

Movie Review #1: 47 Ronin (2013)

"I'm looking for someone who was sold to You"

Okay, so I just finish watching this film this morning. Yes I know it might be too early but hey, it's New Years Day and I don't have to go to work so here it goes:

Starring Keanu Reeves as an enslave half-breed named Kai who help a band of master less samurais to vows vengeance and reclaim their honor.

Of course who could argue that the classic should have been left as it is, but what I like about this film are the addition of new elements. After all, it being a fantasy film it supposed to leave you with imaginative mystical creatures, demons, and witchcraft.

Although this is a movie that is surprisingly did not appeal to the taste of critics and tanked in Japanese Box Office as well as in the U.S., there is something good about 47 Ronin in many ways especially the ending. At least director Carl Rinch decided not to go with the usual old plot of having a white guy saves the day for the locals in a foreign land. If you don't know what I mean, gosh, then watch The Last Samurai with Tom Cruise in it.
